What is a health coach and what can a health coach do for you, exactly?
According to the Institute For Integrative Nutrition, “A Health Coach is a supportive mentor and wellness authority who helps others feel their best through individualized food and lifestyle changes that meet their unique needs and health goals.”
What are YOUR health goals?…
Most of us have health goals that are unique. For example, we may want to exercise more, lose weight, experience less stress, have a fulfilling career, have meaningful relationships, get more and better sleep, stop smoking, eat less sugar or processed food, or address specific medical issues such as diabetes or a gluten allergy/intolerance. And the list goes on.
But how do we accomplish these goals? The small percentage of individuals who set New Year’s goals and achieve them sheds light on how difficult it can be to reach our goals. We know that our health could be better. But knowing is often not enough to reach the desired outcomes that we’ve set for ourselves. Additionally, we are bombarded with information and products designed to help us be our healthiest selves. The next best diet fad, the superfood of the month, the latest, best dietary supplement, fat-free, sugar-free, gluten-free products etc. are all competing for our attention. And our doctors don’t have the time to guide us through this morass of information much less provide ongoing individual support and encouragement.
How a health coach can help YOU?…
This is where health coaches come in. Health coaches are not tyrants who shame clients into creating change that the coach deems appropriate. Instead, they recognize that each individual is unique with their own bio-individual code. A health coach will work alongside you to help and support you in creating and accomplishing the goals for your health and well-being that you and the coach have worked together to establish.
A health coach will
- Help you establish short and long-term goals for your health and well-being(as well as intermediate milestones towards those goals) after thoroughly reviewing your health history.
- Work with your physicians and other healthcare providers to develop plans to meet your needs.
- Support you with regular check-ins and review of the your progress over the period of the health coach contract.
- Educate you about health and lifestyle issues that can be of specific benefit to you.
- Help you overcome obstacles that present themselves along the path to accomplishing your goals.
- Hold you accountable for commitments you have made without judgment or pressure to do things that you are not ready to do.
- Allow you to discover solutions and insights with thoughtful questioning.
- Be a cheerleader and advocate along the way as you meet your personal health and wellness goals step by step.

In a New York Times article entitled “We Could All Use A Health Coach“, Jane Brody quotes Dr. Russell Phillips, director of the Harvard Medical School Center for Primary Care, and my very own primary care physician. “Health coaching should be an integral part of primary care. It helps patients better manage chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension and improves outcomes. As a primary care doctor, I’m focused on diagnosis, treatment and a lot of other medical issues.
